Did you know that it is possible to get to know the unique Turku
archipelago without navigation skills or your own boat? The Little
Archipelago Trail makes this possible during the entire summer (in 2012
from May 18 to September 2). By bike this round trip takes a few days; by
car you can do the entire circuit in as little as a day. The roundtrip
through the archipelago is only about 100 km long.
The first of the three trips is a short jaunt across a
narrow straight in Rymättylä. This free trip takes less than
five minutes. The ferry follows a set timetable, crossing from one side
of the straight to the other approximately every 20 minutes. The second
voyage takes you from Rymättylä to Nagu,
Väståboland. This vessel only makes three trips a day; you
should thus get acquainted with the timetable (www.ostern.fi)
well in advance. If you plan to travel counterclockwise, you will
embark at Hanka. Your third voyage will take you from Nagu to Pargas on
a large ferry. This free trip only takes approximately 10 minutes.
There is generally a ferry connection every 15 minutes during the
daytime. If traveling by car, it is worthwhile to be at the ferry well
in advance, as bookings for cars cannot be made ahead of time.
The Little Archipelago Trail takes you through five
towns – Turku, Raisio, Naantali, Väståboland and
Kaarina. Along the way you will discover fifteen islands that are
permanently inhabited, as well as a few small uninhabited islands. The
Little Archipelago Trail is a part of the larger Archipelago Trail.
